Honeysuckle Rose Practice Loop

March 3, 2021 | Guitar Articles

Here is a loop of Gm7 to C7 of the first part of the song, Honeysuckle Rose.

Some suggested scales and arpeggio's to try would be

  • Gm Pentatonic
  • G Dorian
  • C Mixolydian
  • Em Blues Pentatonic with no 5th (E G A Bb D)
    • The petantonic scale played like this, gives it an E Locrian Mode vibe)
  • F Major / D Minor Petantonic

Using some outside notes too like Eb work nicely but avoid F#.

Also try playing modal licks using a mode scale structure and try playing it as if you were playing a two note per string pentatonic scale for some interesting melodic lines.  The idea is not have access to the entire scale for improvising and selecting a few notes from the scales that bring out the modes flavour.  This almost gives you a two note per string pentatonic vibe to try and be a little more melodic with ones soloing rather than just heading up and down a scale at speed and sounding like everyone else

  • E Locrian Two Note Per string
    • E F A C D
    • E G A C D
  • C Mixolydian (2n / string)
    • C D F G Bb
    • C D F G A
    • C D E G Bb

Note that you dont have to play these two note varieties on two strings but if you try to limit the use to two strings, it gives a less scale like feel and more of an arpeggio flavour.  Don't forget to try your outside notes as well
